Charleston to Beaufort January 30, 2017
We left Charleston on our way to Savannah. On the way, we stayed overnight at a town called Beaufort. Beaufort is a picturesque place on the Beaufort River with a lovely riverfront park and historic streets and homes. This is a popular filming venue. Parts of the Big Chill and Forrest Gump were filmed here. Interesting architecture. Before we left Charleston, there was one more piece of history and architecture to address. It is called the Charleston single house. To combat the risk of fire (they've had some bad ones here over the years), and to aid in the circulation of air on hot summer days, they developed a stand alone home (as opposed to row houses). Notice the front door. It opens on to a porch. You might wonder what purpose it served since you could just walk around the door and climb onto the deck. Well, before the days of air conditioning, when a homeowner may not have the typical dress of the day on because of the heat (ladies had no skin showing)if the homeowner did not want visitors they would close the door. If the door was open, it was acceptable to call on the occupants.
Also, today is my mother's 93rd birthday. Happy birthday mom!
